Delhi government made a big change in the drug purchase policy!

The delhi government has made a big change in the policy of purchase of medicines in government hospitals. Now government hospitals and health centers will buy medicines only from Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras (PMBJK). local purchase (purchase of medicines at the local level) can be done only in case of emergency. health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh said that this decision will bring transparency in the purchase of medicines in government hospitals and patients will be able to get quality medicines at affordable rates.

The delhi government has approved the opening of Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra in six government hospitals. Apart from this, Jan Aushadhi Kendras will be opened in other government hospitals soon. Patients coming to the hospital as well as the people around will get cheap medicines from these centers.

How did this decision come?

On march 6, 2025, an important meeting was held at the delhi Secretariat, in which health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh reviewed the drug purchase policy of government hospitals with all medical superintendents and health officers. In this meeting, it was decided that all the government hospitals of delhi will now have to purchase medicines from Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras only.

For this, the government is starting the process of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with an authorized channel partner of the Pharmaceutical Department. This will smoothen the process of drug procurement and increase the availability of essential medicines in government hospitals.

Why is the government making this change?

• Complaints of many irregularities were being received in the name of local purchasing in government hospitals in Delhi.

• Medicines are available 50-90% cheaper than the market price at Jan Aushadhi Kendras.

• This decision has been taken to reduce government expenditure and provide cheap and quality medicines to the public.
