
National Highway will be as smooth as butter!
Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari on thursday said that for the maintenance of National Highway (NH) network, the government has approved Short Term Maintenance contract (STMC) in 17,884 km length in the current financial year (FY 25). It will cost Rs 2,842 crore. Performance Based Maintenance (PBMC) works have also been approved in 6,118 km length road. Its cost is Rs 6,757 crore.
Mechanism for maintenance of National Highway
In a written statement in the Lok Sabha, the Union minister said that the government has prioritized the maintenance of the existing National Highway network and has prepared a mechanism to ensure maintenance and repair of all NH sections through a maintenance agency. Currently, 1,310 national highway projects of 31,187 km length are under construction in the country at a cost of Rs 8.11 lakh crore.

The contract period for STMC works is usually between 1-2 years. The contract for PBMC works is for about 5-7 years. The government is encouraging the adoption of new technologies and methods to make national highways durable for a long time and reduce the need for periodic maintenance.
The Union minister said that the government assesses the condition of the road through Network survey Vehicle (NSV) before the start of work and before issuing the completion certificate. Evaluation is done at regular intervals of six months after the completion of the work to ensure that the quality of the roads is good.
Work on Advanced Traffic Management System also started
Apart from this, the government has also started work on the installation of Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) on national highways of four lanes and longer. Gadkari said, "ATMS helps in effective monitoring of highways with the help of many different electronic devices, which reduces the time taken to respond to an incident and improves road safety."
