Not Sanjay gandhi, this person gave the idea of sterilization!

The President has declared emergency, but there is nothing to panic about. When on 25 june 1975, the then prime minister indira gandhi announced emergency with these words on the radio, the whole country was terrified. It lasted for almost two years i.e. till 21 march 1977. It is considered a black spot on India's democracy. During that time, the country was turned into a prison overnight. Sanjay Gandhi's order was that sterilization is the only solution to stop the increasing population. In such a situation, millions of people were forcibly sterilized across the country. But this idea was not Sanjay Gandhi's, so who suggested this to him?

60 lakh people were sterilized

Sterilization became the most oppressive campaign during the emergency. The responsibility of implementing this decision was on Sanjay Gandhi's shoulders. He had to prove himself in a short time, so he adopted a very tough stand. people were forcibly sterilized. More than 60 lakh people were sterilized by barging into their homes, luring them, getting them off buses, or catching them in the fields. During this period, indira gandhi ran the country like a dictator.

Who gave the idea of sterilization?

Increasing population has always been a matter of concern for indian intellectuals. people are more inspired by the Western view that a large population invites economic backwardness. In 1951, India's population was about 361 million. At that time, the famous demographer RA Gopalaswami estimated that it would grow at the rate of about five lakh every year. He said that if this continues, india will always have to struggle to meet the food demand even after importing millions of tons every year.

Sterilization was done on a large scale

This is why Gopalaswami suggested a campaign of mass sterilization. Something that no other country has done on this scale before. Following his advice, the government started a sterilization program in 1952. people were made aware of this, but it still proved unsuccessful. In such a situation, Sanjay gandhi strictly enforced the rules during the emergency. Sanjay gandhi wanted an immediate solution to population control. In such a situation, he organized sterilization camps and set necessary targets.
