

India used satellite internet for the first time!
india recently took an important step during the earthquake in Myanmar. During this, india used satellite-based internet in real time for the first time. Under 'Operation Brahma', a special satellite terminal was installed in Mandalay region of Myanmar, which could establish direct contact with the base located in New Delhi. This effort is being considered a major achievement for india in the technical field.
OneWeb did a great job
According to NDTV, till now no company has got formal permission to start satellite internet services in india, but companies like reliance Jio, Elon Musk's Starlink and OneWeb are constantly trying to make their mark in this big market. After the 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar and thailand on march 28, india sent relief material and army team the very next day. During this time, OneWeb, which got temporary permission for testing in november 2023, got a chance to establish connectivity for the first time.
According to Nishtha Kapoor, regional director of OneWeb, within 24 hours of the earthquake, the indian army and field hospitals were connected to the Internet through OneWeb's Low Earth Orbit (LEO) service. OneWeb has also received pre-approval for commercial service from India's space agency IN-SPACe. Now the company is only waiting for spectrum allocation after which they will be able to start their services across India.
The technology was demonstrated in front of the army
OneWeb provided this service through its ground-based large antenna system. Its technology was demonstrated to indian army officials in May last year at the Manekshaw Center in Delhi. The company has partnered with Airtel, Hughes and Kymeta Corporation to improve connectivity in India. The company says that their terminals are secure and geo-fenced which can provide encrypted internet service even in remote areas. OneWeb’s goal is – “Everywhere, All the time, Seamless Connectivity”, which they are making possible through their 8 geostationary and 544 low Earth orbit satellites.
