Every summer, the importance of water conservation is reiterated, yet when a few drops of rain fall, people tend to forget the value of water. However, this year, the residents of Bengaluru are acutely aware of the significance of water due to severe shortages even before the onset of the dry season and scorching heat.
Recent reports of water cuts affecting even the state chief minister's office and the deputy chief minister's residence have sparked widespread concern. In response, authorities are implementing stringent measures to conserve water, particularly targeting activities that waste drinking water. Following numerous complaints on social media about water wastage, action has been taken against violators, resulting in fines imposed on approximately 22 families.
These families were fined Rs. 5,000 each for misusing drinking water for activities such as gardening and car washing. The Bengaluru Water Board has confirmed that a total of Rs. 1.1 lakh in fines was collected from these families, with the majority stemming from the southern region of the city.
In light of the ongoing water shortage, the Water Supply Board has issued further instructions and warnings, urging residents to use drinking water sparingly. Specifically, they have advised against using drinking water for non-essential purposes such as washing cars, bikes, organizing entertainment events, or construction activities. Violators will face fines initially, with subsequent fines increasing by Rs. 500 for each offense.
These measures underscore the urgent need for water conservation and responsible usage, emphasizing the collective responsibility of residents in addressing the water scarcity issue in Bengaluru.
