The famous ancient Patala Sembu Murugan temple is located in Ramalingapatti, Dindigul district.


A Murugan temple is usually found on hilltops, hills and at ground level. Next to the Tiruchendur temple which is found at the ground level, this temple is known as Patala Sembu Murugan temple because it descends from the ground level and is seen in the underworld. Also, this temple is also known as Little Tiruchendur by the local people. This underground copper Murugan temple is located 16 feet below ground level. The war veterans of that era and the military veterans of this era have been paying their respects by circumambulating the temple.There is no paid darshan in this temple. There is a general darshan system for all the devotees who come here. And no matter how much rupees the devotees pay in this temple, all of it is paid for alms. Annadanam is offered daily at 1 pm in this temple.


This temple is visited not only by local devotees but also by other districts and foreign states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana. And not only common people but also celebrities and politicians also visit here.It is also said that famous music composer ilayaraja has composed 5 songs for this underground copper Murugan temple. Also, a separate shrine for Goddess Varagi is being built in this temple. It is said that ilayaraja has written and composed 2 songs for Varaghi Amman too.


Also, the devotional song for this temple has been sung by singers satya and srinivas with lyrics by director Vasanth. Speaking about the special features of this temple, Dr. Ravichandran said, "In those days, ebony wood was used as a plunger in temples, in caskets for positive thoughts, and for the air breathed in the temple to have medicinal qualities.Over time they wore it as a garland around the neck as a reminder not to forget the benefits of the ebony tree. The ebony garlands sold here are worn after offering prayers to Lord Murugan. Also here, differently-abled persons are provided free of charge black-and-white garlands.


If you look at the excellence of Murugan in this temple, the consecrated idol in this temple represents the form of Shakti. Because in this temple Muruga's veal is found on the left side. Also, the vibhuti prepared here is served with herbs. When wearing it, the body is rejuvenated and not affected by diseases," he said.
