The significance of Janmashtami, or Krishna
Hindu texts state that on Ashtami Tithi, or the eighth day of Bhadrapada's dark fortnight, sri krishna was born in mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva. Devaki's brother was Kansa, the Mathuran demon king. According to a prophecy, Kansa's misdeeds would cause the eighth son of Devaki to kill him. Thus, Kansa imprisoned both his own sister and her husband.
As soon as the children were born, he tried to assassinate Devaki in order to stop the prophecy from happening. Once Devaki gave birth to her ninth child, magic threw the entire palace into a profound sleep. By putting the baby inside Yashodha and Nanda's house in Vrindavan throughout the night, Vasudeva was able to shield him from Kansa's fury. This baby was the embodiment of Lord Vishnu, who thereafter assumed the name sri krishna and put an end to Kansa's terror campaign by killing him.
