According to Hindu mythology, Kerala's famous monarch, king Mahabali, was a very giving man. During his rule, the kingdom was incredibly affluent and tranquil. The kingdom's populace was content and adored their ruler. Deities, the adversary of demons, desired Mahabali's extermination from Earth. When king Mahabali overthrew them to take the throne, they were envious of him. king Mahabali received Lord vishnu from them.
In order to put king Mahabali to the test, Lord vishnu assumed the appearance of Vamana Avatar, a Brahmin, and requested three feet of land from him. After he gave his consent, Lord vishnu proceeded to traverse all the worlds in two steps and requested for a location for his third step. Vamana obliged king Mahabali by placing his third foot on his head, sending him into the netherworld. However, this pleased Lord Vishnu, who was also pleased by his charity and devotion. king Mahabali was bestowed with the ability to visit his realm (Kerala) once a year by Lord Vishnu. For this reason, Keralans commemorate this onam holiday as the day their adored monarch Mahabali returns home.
