Bulls Adorned and Celebrated on Polala Amavasya in adilabad, Telangana

Polala Amavasya, observed on september 2, is a sacred day dedicated to honoring ancestors and is believed to bring good fortune, spiritual growth, and prosperity. In adilabad, Telangana, this festival holds special significance as it celebrates the vital role of bulls in agriculture.

The festival, which falls on the New moon (Amavasya) of the shravan month, is marked by giving bulls a well-deserved break from their usual farm duties. On this day, farmers in adilabad decorate their bulls with colorful ornaments and parade them around local temples. The animals are treated with great reverence, akin to Nandi, the sacred bull of Lord Shiva.

The bulls are groomed and given a bath in the village pond before being adorned with an array of decorations. Farmers paint their horns, use colored paper and ornaments, and attach jingling bells to their feet. Nose rings, anklets, and handcrafted leather accessories complete their festive attire. The vibrant decorations include special cloths called ‘joola,’ which are embroidered with designs of birds, flowers, creepers, deities, elephants, and peacocks.

Markets are bustling with activity as farmers purchase these decorative items, with many willing to spend generously for this annual celebration. Ramesh, a farmer from Pardi, Jainad village, told Local18 that despite the high cost of these items, they are happy to invest in them for their beloved bulls just once a year.
