Heartbreaking news has come out for India. Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the gold medal match at the paris olympics 2024. This happened when Vinesh Phogat was found to be a few grams overweight before the wrestling final against USA's Sarah Hildebrandt in the 50kg freestyle event. Vinesh was within the weight criteria before the qualifiers and semi-final rounds. However, she was found to be a few grams overweight before the final and hence she was disqualified before the final and now she will not be eligible for the silver medal as well. Let's find out how the Olympic wrestling weigh-in rules work...

What are the Olympic wrestling weigh-in rules?

Changes to names sent by a wrestling federation are only possible if an athlete sustains a serious injury, but for that, a medical certificate has to be submitted to the wrestling federation. Also, this has to be done at least 12 hours before the day of the competition for the respective weight category. After this, no changes can be made.

No changes will be accepted after this time. For all competitions, the weight is measured every morning for the respective weight category. The weigh-in and medical check-up last for 30 minutes. Usually, wrestling matches are over in two days. In such a situation, only those wrestlers come for weight measurement the next day who are either in the repechage or have reached the final. The weigh-in ceremony the next day lasts for about 15 minutes.

No wrestler's weight will be measured unless he has undergone a medical check-up on the first morning. Wrestlers must attend a medical examination. They must also have their license and accreditation certificate with them.

The athlete must be in the singlet jersey he/she will wear during the match. Any wrestler who is suffering from an infectious disease after being examined by qualified physicians will be disqualified.

No weight tolerances will be allowed for singlets. Competitors must be in perfect physical condition, with their nails cut very short. During the entire weigh-in period, wrestlers have the right, each in turn, to have their weight measured as many times as they wish.

The referee responsible for the weigh-ins must check that all wrestlers are of the weight corresponding to the category in which they are entered for the competition and that they meet all the requirements of Article 5. Also, if an athlete enters the mat in the wrong jerseythe opponent can be warned about this.

The referee will refuse to weigh a wrestler who is not wearing the correct clothing. The referee responsible for the weigh-in will receive the results of the draw and will only be allowed to control the athletes who are on this list.

If an athlete does not participate or fails the weigh-in event (both days), he or she will be eliminated from the competition. That athlete will also not be ranked. If an athlete is injured during their competition on the first day, they will not need to be present for the weigh-in on the second day and will continue to be ranked. For example, if Vinesh got injured after playing all three matches yesterday, she would not have been present during the weigh-in today and would have won the silver medal if she did not enter the final.

Was Vinesh Phogat in the 50kg category before?

In an unfortunate turn of events, Vinesh was in the weight category on the first day, i.e. August 6. The 29-year-old athlete had cleared her first day's weigh-in rule well. She then went on to beat tokyo 2020 top seed and gold medallist Susaki. Vinesh defeated former european champion Oksana Livach of ukraine in the quarterfinals and reigning Pan-American champion Yusnelis Guzman of cuba in the semifinals.

Vinesh Phogat loses weight ahead of paris olympics 2024

Since last year, Vinesh Phogat has fought not just for her career but also for her life. She was one of the protesters against the former Wrestling Association of india chief and became India's biggest hope to win its first gold medal in wrestling at the Olympics. Vinesh also had to undergo surgery last year and then made a tremendous comeback. Due to this surgery, she could not play in the Asian Games as well. However, she had to reduce her weight to 50 kg to get an Olympic berth. She contested her last olympics in the 53 kg category. Since Anant Panghal qualified for this category, Vinesh had to reduce her weight to 50 kg. It is believed that after fighting three intense bouts in a single day, he took electrolytes and other supplements to regain his energy, which may have led to weight gain.
