'I Was 16 When PM Modi Told Me I Would Be Successful' - manu Bhaker

On National sports Day, indian Olympic medallist manu Bhaker reflected on her interactions with prime minister Narendra Modi and the inspiration he has provided to athletes.

At just 22 years old, manu Bhaker made history at the 2024 paris olympics by becoming the first indian to win two medals in a single olympic games since independence. She also became the first indian woman to medal in an individual shooting event at the Olympics.

Manu first met PM Modi when she was 16, following her gold medal win at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She was struck by his genuine interest in her career.

“During our meeting, he took me aside and said, ‘You are very young. You will achieve even greater success, and reach out to me whenever you need anything.’ This was incredibly motivating for me,” manu recalled.

Following a challenging tokyo olympics campaign where a pistol malfunction prevented her from winning a medal, PM Modi reached out to offer encouragement and discuss her future plans.

“PM Modi advised me to stay confident and focus on my goals. He keeps track of every detail about each player,” manu noted.

She appreciates that PM Modi’s support extends beyond celebrating victories, emphasizing his commitment to nurturing and supporting athletes regardless of their results. His personal outreach and attentiveness to their concerns make athletes feel valued and inspired.

After winning her first medal at the paris Olympics—a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol—PM Modi congratulated manu for her historic achievement. She also secured a bronze in the Mixed 10m air Pistol with Sarabjot Singh and finished fourth in the women’s 25m Pistol event.
