US Open 2024: Big upset at US Open, Pegula beats Swiatek to reach semi-finals, Sinner beats Medvedev


After the early exit of former world number one players Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner is now the only Grand Slam winner left in men's singles.

A big upset was seen at the US Open on Wednesday. Jessica Pegula of America upset world number one player Iga Swiatek in straight sets here on wednesday to reach the semi-finals of the women's singles of the US Open tennis tournament. At the same time, world number one player Yannick Sinner defeated former champion Daniil Medvedev in four sets in men's singles on wednesday to enter the semi-finals of the US Open tennis tournament for the first time. Top seed Sinner of italy defeated 2021 champion Medvedev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Sinner made a strong comeback after losing the first two sets in the final of the Australian Open in january and won the title by defeating Medvedev in five sets. Sinner will face Britain's 25th seed Jack Draper on Friday to make it to the final. Another semi-final will be played on the same day between 12th seed Taylor Fritz and 20th seed Frances Tiafoe. 22-year-old Draper has made it to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. He is the first british male player to reach the semi-finals of the US Open since Andy Murray won the trophy in 2012.

 He defeated 10th seed alex de Minaur 6-3, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarter-finals. 30-year-old Pegula defeated Swiatek 6-2, 6-4 to enter the semi-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. Earlier, sixth seed Pegula had to face defeat six times in the quarter-finals of Grand Slam tournaments. Pegula, who has won 14 of her last 15 matches on hard court, said, "I was losing so many times. I know everyone kept asking me about this but my answer was that I don't know what I have to do differently. I just have to go on the court and win the match. So thank godwas able to do this and finally I can say that I am a semi-finalist."

Pegula will face unseeded Carolina Muchova of the czech republic in the semi-finals on Thursday. Muchova, who was the runner-up in the French Open 2023 final with a loss to Swiatek, made it to the US Open semi-finals for the second time in a row by defeating 22nd seed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-1, 6-4. Muchova underwent surgery on her right wrist after losing to Coco Gauff in the US Open semi-finals last year and then stayed away from the tour for almost 10 months and returned in June. In the other semi-final on Thursday, 13th seed Emma Navarro of America will face second seed Arina Sabalenka.
