Coco Gauff's 6-3, 6-4 win over Swiatek ensured that 26-year-old Sabalenka from belarus will top the women's rankings at the end of 2024. Sabalenka briefly overtook Swiatek in september last year to take the top spot in the world rankings. Swiatek, however, regained the top spot by winning the WTA Finals. The WTA also announced on tuesday that Katerina Siniakova will be number one in the year-end doubles rankings. The czech republic player had previously topped the women's doubles rankings at the end of 2018, 2021 and 2022.

Sabalenka said she always wanted to dominate the tour like Serena Williams and more recently Iga Swiatek. The Belarusian star also said that she is currently focused on improving herself to ensure that she continues to dominate the tour.

This year, Sabalenka impressed in the Grand Slam and she managed to win the Australian Open for the second time without losing a set. After this, she also won the US Open. Apart from this, she also won two WTA 1000 titles. Sabalenka became the champion of the Cincinnati Open in august and the wuhan Open in October, which strengthened her to stay at the top this season.
