Karthik revisits two-month-old 'Champions Trophy' plea for varun Chakaravarthy: 'Could india have accommodated him?'
Former indian wicketkeeper-batsman dinesh karthik has reiterated his advocacy for varun Chakaravarthy following the 29-year-old leg-spinner's impressive showing in the opening T20I of the series against England.
More than two months prior, karthik had urged the bcci to consider including chakravarthy in the Champions Trophy lineup. Despite his remarkable performances in T20Is, the spinner was overlooked for the ODI team, as the Champions Trophy is contested in the 50-over format.
Chakravarthy has rapidly established himself as one of India's most reliable bowlers in the shortest format over recent months, solidifying his standing with a fantastic 3/23 effort in the first T20I in kolkata on Wednesday. His skill in adjusting to various pitches has garnered him positive feedback, including commendations from karthik, who has been closely monitoring the bowler's development.
In response to his previous tweet from two months ago, where he mentioned that india would commit a "serious mistake" by not selecting Chakaravarthy for the Champions Trophy, karthik expressed his views on X (formerly Twitter), asking, "Could they have accommodated him????"
Chakaravarthy's impressive performances
Chakravarthy, recognized for his clever variations and remarkable precision, was particularly outstanding during the second T20I of the series against South Africa, where he achieved exceptional figures of 5/17. Although india lost that match, Varun's bowling performance was noted as the best T20I statistics by a bowler from a full member nation in a losing effort.
Despite a considerable gap between India's T20I matches, Chakaravarthy maintained his consistency on wednesday against England, where he claimed three wickets, taking down three of England's top batsmen - captain Jos Buttler, Harry Brook, and Liam Livingstone.
His performances have also been noteworthy in the IPL, where he has been a crucial player for the kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). With 21 wickets at an average of 19.14 in IPL 2024, varun has demonstrated his tremendous potential across all formats.
Although varun has yet to make his ODI debut, his recent performances have only bolstered the case for his inclusion in upcoming limited-overs teams.
