episode 9 of house of the Dragon focuses on the green party's seizure of the iron Throne and how some important characters switched sides to Rhaenyra's side as a result of their actions. The green party, commanded by Alicent, Otto, Criston, Aegon, and Aemond, conspires to crown Aegon as king when king Viserys dies in the house of the Dragon episode 8 ending. Their treasons and crimes cause havoc in King's Landing. Aegon usurps Rhaenyra's throne in the finale of house of the Dragon episode 9, effectively dividing the realm between loyalty to two Targaryen factions: Aegon's greens and Rhaenyra's blacks. Rhaenyra is still unconscious that such events have occurred.

In spite of Rhaenyra and Daemon being gone from episode 9 of house of the Dragon, a few black party members make an appearance in response to the greens' disloyalty. In "The Green Council," Otto and Alicent spend a lot of time trying to win over significant allies and killing those who declare for Rhaenyra. Criston Cole and Otto Hightower execute Lyman Beesbury and Allun Caswell, two of the would-be blacks who defended Rhaenyra, while house of the Dragon implies that a few other lords are also put to death off-screen.

Alicent, Otto, Criston, Aemond, Helaena, the Hightowers of Oldtown, Arryk Cargyll, Larys Strong, the Lannisters, Grand Maester Orwyle, and Jasper Wylde are the main characters on Aegon's side by the end of house of the Dragon episode 9. Even though Rhaenyra doesn't have nearly as many strong allies going into the Targaryen civil war, there are still plenty of people who will support the blacks because they despise the Hightowers and the greens, are loyal to Viserys' word that she is the heir, and will swear allegiance to her after making mutually advantageous agreements.
