"Fortnite Returns to iphone via Epic Games Store, but Access Limited"

On Friday, the Epic Games Store launched on iOS in the EU and globally on the google Play Store, marking the first time in years that gamers can easily play Fortnite on mobile. The store also introduced Fall Guys and Rocket League Swipe to iPhones, Android devices, and the AltStore PAL.

Epic confirmed the launch, stating they are working to allow all developers to release their games and apps through the Epic Games Store in the future. The company also announced the expansion of its offerings to independent mobile stores, including AltStore PAL.

While this is a significant win for Epic and Fortnite fans, the situation is complex. The european Union’s wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital Markets Act enabled this launch by requiring apple to allow alternative app stores on iOS devices. However, Apple’s “Core technology Fee” of €0.50 per installation after the first million downloads creates a financial burden for companies like Epic, who may need to pass these costs on to consumers. The EU Commission is currently investigating whether Apple’s compliance with the wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital Markets Act is adequate.

For users, this could mean higher prices and added steps to install apps. Additionally, there’s a discrepancy in iOS version requirements, with the Epic Games Store prompting users to update to iOS 17.6, while Epic’s FAQ states compatibility with iOS 17.4. Despite these challenges, the ability to play Fortnite on iPhones again is a welcome change.
