Shobizzy: Because Who Needs job Applications Anyway?

In a world where the unemployment crisis in hollywood feels like a bad movie plot—full of twists, turns, and an ending that leaves everyone feeling a little uneasy—Shobizzy has arrived. This shiny new networking app for the tv industry is here to “revolutionize” the way freelancers find work. Because, obviously, what we all need is yet another app to help us navigate the chaotic world of freelancing, right?

Launched in january (just in time for all those hopeful New Year’s resolutions), Shobizzy claims to open “new doors” for freelancers who are, let’s face it, probably standing outside of a locked door marked “Employment Opportunities” and hoping someone will let them in. With many tv and film crew members grappling with the instability of freelance work, the app's creators seem to think that just by existing, it will magically solve everyone’s problems. Spoiler alert: it won't.

Unlike traditional job boards like Backstage and StaffMeUp—where applicants must go through the riveting and highly enjoyable process of filling out applications—Shobizzy offers a more “social” approach. But hey, at least you can do it with style!

Doug Weitzbuch, co-founder and a freelance tv producer with two decades of experience (you know, the kind that makes him practically a dinosaur in this fast-paced industry), told TechCrunch, “Freelancers live a very non-traditional career path.” Thanks, Doug, we were unaware! He goes on to explain that in this “who you know” business, your network is your most valuable asset. So, in essence, Shobizzy is just a fancy way to collect business cards while pretending you’re actually getting somewhere.

And if you thought the app was limited to tv gigs, think again! Shobizzy has decided to expand its horizons into live events and content creation. Because why not add more chaos to the mix? Freelancers can now network their way into a variety of industries while still being completely unsure where their next paycheck will come from. Sounds like a win-win!
