What is DeepSeek? How did it start?

Liang Wenfeng founded DeepSeek in december 2023, and the following year the company unveiled its first AI large language model. Liang, who received degrees in computer science and electronic information engineering from Zhejiang University, is not well recognized.

In 2015, a man named Liang Wenfeng founded a quantitative hedge fund in china named High-Flyer. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, quantitative hedge funds use trading algorithms and statistical models to find patterns in the market and automatically buy or sell stocks.

Liang Wenfeng founded Fire-Flyer, a deep-learning research branch under High-Flyer, to analyze a lot of financial data and support the most difficult operations. He also accumulated a large stock of graphics processing units (GPUs) to build supercomputers. This is where the foundation of DeepSeek was laid. While working at Fire-Flyer, Liang Wenfeng recognized the power of AI and decided to launch DeepSeek.

Liang Wenfeng's dream was that DeepSeek would create AI models that could think and work exactly like humans. This is called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). According to a report by Chinese tech news site QBitAI, instead of hiring experienced engineers, Liang included PhD students from top universities in china in the research team of DeepSeek. These students may not have had industry experience, but they had a desire to learn and the ability to innovate. These students made DeepSeek a shining star in the world of AI.
