How much spectrum is needed for 6G?

GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association) has worked out how much spectrum is needed for 6G communications such as XR (Extended Reality) and holograms.

Some 6G use-cases will require a lot of data, so each network will need at least 1 GHz of spectrum. If there are 3-4 operators in a country and we assume that the mid-band spectrum (around 1 GHz) for IMT (International mobile Telecommunications) will be used only for wide-area use-cases, then each network will need about 500-750 MHz of additional new wide-area spectrum in the 7-15 GHz range.

It is possible to use existing frequency bands to launch 6G. But, it is not easy to shut down older mobile generations. Even though new technology allows different mobile generations to be used in the same frequency band, it is only good for a short time. This does not allow the spectrum to be used properly.

What did the government do for 5G?

5G service in india has now reached almost the entire country. 5g has been started in all states and union territories. 5g is available in 773 out of 776 districts, including Lakshadweep. As of 28 february 2025, Telecom service Providers (TSPs) have installed 4.69 lakh 5g base transceiver stations (BTSs) across the country.

The government auctioned spectrum to start 5g service. Financial reforms were made to fix Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR), bank Guarantees (BGs) and interest rates. Spectrum usage charge was removed for spectrum purchased in the 2022 and subsequent auctions.
