Joelle Pineau Steps Down As Meta's AI Research Leader
Joelle Pineau, VP of AI studies at Meta, has announced her departure after nearly 8 years with the organization. Her final day might be May 30, 2025.
Her remaining day could also be on 30, 2025.
Pineau joined Meta in 2017 to steer the Montreal AI studies lab and became head of the fundamental AI studies (honest) group in 2023. She performed a critical role in growing Meta's Llama series of open-source huge language models; however, she also contributed to improvements in machine learning frameworks like PyTorch and AI applications in voice translation and photo recognition.
Her departure coincides with Meta's intensified attention on AI, with plans to invest between $60 billion and $65 billion in AI improvement this year, which includes increasing records center infrastructure and growing the number of pics processing devices (GPUs) to 1.3 million. Pineau's exit presents a leadership assignment as Meta competes with companies like OpenAI and Anthropic. The organization has not yet announced a successor.
