The Elder Gods have long been thought to be the true adversaries of doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, prompting a lot of conjecture. When WandaVision revealed the Darkhold, a book of terrible magic left behind by Chthon that contains spells that disrupt the fabric of reality itself, it set up the most terrifying of all these Elder Gods, Chthon. It also established a probable link between Scarlet Witch and Chthon when Agatha Harkness recognised Wanda Maximoff's Chaos Magic power as being stronger than the Sorcerer Supreme's.

Wanda was born at a place where the fabric of reality is thin, allowing Chthon to bless her with his power so she would unwittingly aid him sow chaos and break through to this plane of existence. In the MCU, Wanda's origin as the Scarlet Witch is different, yet her Chaos Magic could still be tied to the Elder Gods.

The Elder Gods have been hinted for doctor Strange 2, and Chthon isn't the only one. Another of his type, Shuma-Gorath, was seen causing havoc on the streets of New York in trailers for doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness; according to merchandising, Shuma-Gorath has been renamed Gargantos, probably since Marvel doesn't control the rights to the term "Shuma-Gorath." The fact that moon Knight is dealing with a concept that is clearly related to the Elder Gods in the comics - just before a supernatural film that appears to have several ties to them as well - is striking.
