Sri Pongalayi  Amman temple is located in Malayampatti village near Rasipuram in Namakkal district. For more than  200  years, only men have been participating in the temple for pongal and Kidavetti.

Only men participate in the festival and offer their offerings to the Goddess.  This year's festival started with the last poochattu and was preceded by special decorations and aaradhanas to Pongalai Amman Swamy and Vinayaka Swamy. The rams are worshipped before the Lord at night and sacrificed and the slaughtered rams are cooked there throughout the night and a community feast is held only for men in the early morning.

A total of 177 rams were slaughtered and more than 500  kg of rice was made into pongal balls and only men could participate in the feast.   More than 5,000 men from Chennai, Karur, Trichy, Dharmapuri, and surrounding areas participated in the festival.

About 200  years ago, during the festival, a woman came down from the hill and asked the women of the village if she was thirsty and wanted water. The woman told me to cut a ram once a year and conduct a festival.

But it is still believed that the woman told me that no woman who does not help me should enter my temple and only men should conduct this festival.  Based on this, even after  200 years, no women go to the temple and this festival is still seen as bizarre even today, with only men participating.
