Hyderabad Woman Alleges Theft and Extortion by swiggy Delivery Agent

A hyderabad woman has accused a swiggy Genie agent of stealing her laptop and demanding a ransom of ₹15,000. Nishitha Gudipudi, a civil engineer, recounted the incident in a LinkedIn post, detailing how her husband used swiggy Genie to transport a backpack containing the laptop from one office to another in Madhapur. According to Gudipudi, the delivery agent picked up the backpack but then switched off his phone midway through the delivery.

Initially, Gudipudi thought it might have been an error in using swiggy Genie for the delivery. However, the situation worsened when they reached out to swiggy customer care and struggled to identify the delivery agent. swiggy sent two photos for identification, but Gudipudi suspected that Swiggy’s system allows anyone to log in with another person's Aadhaar or PAN card details.

The “scariest part” came when they were able to contact the agent via whatsapp, only to receive a message demanding ₹15,000 to return the laptop through another delivery service, Rapido. Gudipudi shared screenshots of the whatsapp conversation and photos of both the registered agent and the unauthorized person who accessed the account using facial recognition.

In response, swiggy terminated the delivery agent and is working with authorities to address the issue. The company stated, “At swiggy, safeguarding our consumers’ safety and trust is our top priority. This incident breaches our code of conduct, and the delivery executive involved has been removed from our platform. We are in contact with the customer and are supporting the authorities investigating the matter to resolve this issue promptly.”

Public Reactions:

One person noted: “Fortunately, hyderabad has a great police force. File a complaint; it should be resolved quickly. My experience with the hyderabad police was very positive when they dealt with a rash driver.”

Another commented: “Did you get your laptop back? I don’t trust these platforms with valuable items like laptops and mobiles. It’s better to handle such items personally. I had a frightening experience with a drunk ola driver; nobody seemed to care after reporting it.”

A third shared: “A friend faced a similar issue with a swiggy delivery agent who didn’t deliver her food and became abusive when she complained. The agent even waited near her home. We had to file an FIR, and it was also with Swiggy.”
