Noida to Build Rs 5-Crore Animal Shelter Near Dhanauri Wetland

In response to the environmental challenges posed by the noida airport project, the Uttar Pradesh government has initiated plans to build a dedicated animal shelter. This facility will be constructed on a 10-hectare site near Dhanauri Wetland and will be managed under a 30-year lease by noida International airport Limited (NIAL). The project is budgeted at Rs 5 crore and aims to provide refuge for displaced wildlife affected by the airport’s development.

The noida International airport project, which involves the first phase of development covering 1,334 hectares and impacting six villages, is displacing various wildlife species, including Nilgai, Black Buck, indian Chinkara, monkeys, golden jackals, wild cats, and cranes. To address these ecological disruptions, a comprehensive wildlife rehabilitation plan has been launched.

The Wildlife Institute of india (WII) in dehradun recommended the establishment of a rescue centre as part of a broader biodiversity conservation strategy. This proposed facility will include specialized enclosures for different species, including monkeys, Nilgai, and black deer. It will also feature an animal hospital with a budget allocation of Rs 74 lakh and a quarantine centre with Rs 21 lakh.

An annual maintenance budget of Rs 10 lakh will be necessary for the upkeep of the centre. The proposal for the wildlife rescue centre has already received preliminary approval from the Central Zoo Authority’s drawing committee and is currently undergoing a technical review. Following this, it will be submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Forests for final authorization.

Once the project receives the green light from the state government, a construction agency will be selected to carry out the development. This initiative reflects a commitment to balancing infrastructure growth with environmental conservation, ensuring the protection of local wildlife amidst ongoing urban expansion.
