Controversy Erupts Over school Punishing Student for Late-Night Toilet Use
A boarding school in Shanxi province, China, is facing backlash after a student was punished for using the restroom past the 10:45 PM curfew. The incident, which occurred at Yundong Secondary school, involved a student who went to the toilet at 11:00 PM and was reprimanded by staff. In response, the school required him to write a "deep self-reflection" letter and distribute 1,000 copies to his classmates, alongside deducting five points from his class’s monthly discipline score.

An anonymous teacher disclosed to beijing News that strict rules prohibit students from moving around the dormitory after curfew and mandate that those needing to use the toilet must seek permission from dorm administrators. The student’s self-reflection letter expressed regret for disturbing others and acknowledged his breach of school rules.

The incident sparked significant outrage on social media, with critics likening the school environment to a "prison." In light of the backlash, the education Department of Huairen intervened, instructing the school to reconsider its disciplinary policies. They mandated that the school engage with the student compassionately and compensate him for the costs incurred from photocopying the essay.

Officials also directed all schools in the city to adopt more humane discipline practices to prevent similar situations in the future.
