Infosys co-founder NR narayana murthy has recently clarified on his controversial statement, in which he advised the youth to work 70 hours a week. This statement of Narayan Murthy remained a topic of discussion for a long time and people gave different reactions to it. Now on his old statement, he has clarified that his purpose was not to force anyone to work forcefully, but he said this as advice for introspection.
'Can't force anyone'
Narayan Murthy had recently said in a program that young professionals should work harder to succeed in their career. His statement angered many people and was seen as excessive pressure towards work. However, now Murthy has reconsidered his statement and said that "no one can be forced to work for long hours."
Speaking to reporters after the Kilachand Memorial Lecture held in mumbai on Monday, Murthy said, "I worked more than 70 hours every week for 40 years in my career. This is my personal experience. But it does not mean that everyone should do the same." He stressed that it is important that every person takes decisions according to his situation and needs. Murthy further said, "This is not a rule. This is just my experience. Every person should work according to his ability and circumstances." He also said that more important than working hours is how beneficial our work is for the society.
'Need to think for yourself'
Narayan Murthy stressed on introspection instead of debating on this issue. He said, "People do not need to discuss or debate too much on the advice I have given. Instead, it is important that every person should think about it for themselves and understand what is right for them."
