30 years old thirst is now about to be quenched! The sandy areas of rajasthan - Sikar, Churu and Jhunjhunu - which were facing water crisis for decades, are now hoping for fresh water from Yamuna. In this connection, on april 21, chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma will hold an important review meeting in Pilani. Senior officials of the haryana government will also attend this meeting. According to the official statement, this meeting is being held before the second meeting of the joint task force of haryana and rajasthan, which will be held in hisar on april 25. According to news agency PTI, the roots of this initiative are in the yamuna Water Agreement of 1994, under which 577 MCM (1917 cusecs) of water was allocated to rajasthan every year from Tajewala Head (now Hathinikund Barrage). But this allocation has remained confined to papers till now.
The historic agreement was made on 17 february 2024
This 30-year-old file finally got momentum on 17 february 2024, when a historic agreement was reached in the presence of the Chief Ministers of rajasthan and haryana and the Union Water Power Minister. Under this agreement, it was agreed to prepare a joint DPR (Detailed Project Report) of the flow system to bring drinking water from Tajewala Head to Rajasthan.
Both the states of rajasthan and haryana have formed a joint task force for DPR. In this direction, a meeting of the Additional Chief Secretaries of both the states was held in chandigarh on 26 march 2025. After this, the first joint task force meeting was held in Yamunanagar on 7 april, in which the possible 'alignment' and ground tests of the water pipeline were discussed.
yamuna water will reach through 3 underground pipelines
Under this scheme, it is proposed to bring water from Hathinikund Barrage to Hansiyawas Reservoir in Churu district through 3 underground pipelines. If this scheme is implemented in a timely manner, not only will the thirst of thousands of people be quenched, but there will also be a big change in the social and economic life of the region. This initiative is no less than a lifesaver for these districts of rajasthan grappling with water crisis. The activism of chief minister Sharma, the support of the Centre and the spirit of coordination between the two states can soon turn this dream into reality.
