JRD Tata was the son of noted businessman Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and his wife Suzanne Briere. He was born to an indian father and French mother. His mother Suzanne was the first woman in india to drive a car in 1929 he became the first licensed pilot in India. He is the founder of several industries under the Tata group such as Tata Consultancy services, Tata Motors, Titan industries, Tata salt, Voltas, and air India.
Even though he was from a wealthy family, he started his career as an unpaid apprentice, and then he rose to the position of the company's chairman. He had a passion for flying and he is the first person to get a pilot license in India. He even established India's first commercial airline, Tata airlines which later became air India.
After the demise of Shri JN Tata on May 19, 1904, JRD Tata was born on July 29, 1904, and he joined as an apprentice in 1923. He became the Chairman of Tata Group in 1936. He gave his company workers, eight hours work, free hospital service, free company quarters, PF, etc and he said it is is his duty to take care of the labor.
Tata was also controversially supportive of the declaration of emergency powers by prime minister, indira gandhi, in 1975. More than 30% of the Tata group industries are in Jamshedpur. Tata Steel plants have shown tremendous growth in that area. JRD tata also opened ancillaries to make goods associated with Tata Steel. His contributions to India’s progress extended well beyond business. He firmly believed in the holistic development of society. He took his last breath on 29 november 1993 at the age of 89 of a kidney infection.
