Why is Female Genital Mutilation done?
Some people consider FGM a ritual or tradition. There are different reasons behind this practice in every place. These also keep changing with time. These are all reasons related to family and society. Where female circumcision is common, people do it under pressure that other people are doing it, so we should also do it. If someone does not do this, he is expelled from the society.
Some people think that it is necessary to do this to grow up the girl and prepare her for marriage. Some people also think that this reduces the girl's desires and she will remain faithful after marriage. However, it is not written in any religion like islam or christianity that it is necessary to do this. Some religious gurus also speak against it. Still, people justify it in the name of religion.
In many places, people are also against this practice. Even boys are against it. This means that many people want this practice to end. In the countries of Africa and the Middle east where this practice is most prevalent, two-thirds of the people want it to stop. There are about 40 crore such people.
