How Climate change increase inequality among people?
According to research, conditions such as economic problems, social instability, bad environment and stress promote violence. The same study also stated that after Hurricane Katrina, the risk of new mothers being beaten by men increased eight times. Apart from this report, five researches related to sub-Saharan Africa have found that cases of physical abuse, child marriage, dowry violence and femicide have also increased during drought.
Violence is less in countries with higher GDP
The same study of the university of london also revealed that the rate of violence against women is lower in countries with higher Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to the researchers, the current data shows that when a woman faces climate-related events, her chances of becoming a victim of violence increase in some countries, while this does not happen in other countries. The researchers also stated that their aim was to understand what is happening at the national level, so as to better inform international climate change policies. However, the researchers expressed their inability to determine why different climate events have different effects on partner violence.
They believe that the impact of different problems on violence may be visible at different times, and this aspect could not be included in the two-year study period due to lack of data. Therefore, the researchers are appealing to countries to regularly collect data related to violence against women.
