RBI's new Deputy governor Poonam Gupta!

The central government on wednesday appointed Poonam Gupta, director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), as the Deputy governor of the bank OF INDIA' target='_blank' title='reserve bank of india-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>reserve bank of india (RBI). She will replace MD Patra, who left his post in January. The Appointments Committee of the cabinet (ACC) has approved her appointment for three years.

Educational qualification and Career

Poonam Gupta has a Masters in economics from delhi School of economics and PhD from university of Maryland, USA. She started her career with teaching and taught at many prestigious institutions including delhi School of economics, ISI Delhi. After this she joined the IMF and the World bank, where she worked for about 20 years. Since 2021, she was serving as the director General of NCAER.

Key Achievements and Responsibilities

Poonam Gupta has been the convener of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council and the Advisory Committee of the 16th Finance Commission. She has also chaired the Task Force on Macroeconomics and Trade during India's G20 Presidency. In 1998, she was awarded the EXIM bank Award for her PhD on international economics.
